The United States president yesterday threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807. This act gives the president the power to deploying active duty US soldiers to police US Streets in the wake of George Floyd’s death protest across so many American cities.
According to the president, this move will break up anti-fascists, or Antifa who according to the US government is turning the demonstration to a violent one. This has resulted in so many looting, Killings, injuries, and disruption of public peace.
This law was used in the 1950s to enforce desegregation. It was also imposed in the 60s to quench the riots in Detroit. The law later surfaced in 1992 during the riot in Los Angeles after four white cops were acquitted following the killing of Rodney King.
Insurrection Act was given a congressional amendment in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2006 to give more clarity about its usage in situations of Natural disasters.
This time around, President Trump made it open Monday that if the governors failed to act the way he likes, he will call up the military to take over the states, mostly trouble states.
So many Governors were quick to distance themselves from the use of Military. One of them is Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois. He disputed the move on CNN shortly after Trump’s comments.
